Two New Series

3Oct

First up, an apology for not being able to get the September article released. September was the peak of my work load (working evenings and weekends for a long while) and poor old J4D slipped by. Sorry all!

So, before I ask for your opinion on what's next - the next screencast will be covering animations (of sorts), fundamentally similar to the jQuery Coda Slider, but being used in completely different ways - this should be online next week.

Next Up

I've been thinking about the next lot of tutorials, and I've been thinking about introducing two new 'series' of screencasts, in addition to the existing request based tutorials:

  1. Playschool for jQuery
  2. Learning the jQuery API

Obviously I'd still accept requests and still try to mix it up a bit.

Playschool for jQuery (though the term/name may change) would be for absolute noobs and I'd try my best to keep it really simple and very much as a first time introduction to jQuery and JavaScript. However, it's a bit of a risk, since it relies almost entirely on you, the reader, to point your newbie colleague to this web site.

The second would be a small section of the API chosen depending on demand or interest, and dipped in to. They will be designed to be short and sweet, and even accompany the API if possible. Ajax is a easy example to think of, but then we could look at the global Ajax functions, etc.

Let me know what you think. Good idea? Bad idea? Any other/better ideas?

I would love to see more focus object oriented ways of using jQuery. But all-in-all thanks for all your hard work!

Dive into the Ajax API is a very good idea.

If you're going to do parts of the API then the whole prependTo, prepend, append, appendTo always baffles me. Add in that the clone() method.

you should definetly include the playschool for jquery... also a cool jquery gallery (not lightbox) would be cool too

I'd love the API part alot, especially if you could get deeper into the functions of pulling data from databases/php files in realtime using ajax/jquery!

i am not so sure if it is a good idea... i love your tutorials because they are simple (and explained) enough to understand every single detail even without being a jquery/javascript/css/html guru, achieving at the same time quite sophisticated results! i think there are plenty of other resources for learning jquery from scratch out there, but very few offering as good stuff as J4D, until now at least...

I think it's an excellent idea to do some more deep diving into the API.

I find that at the moment there are alot of good resources for beginners so personally i would like to see more advanced concepts being explained.

I only got into jQuery about 2 months ago and i've found this site among many others do a great job already at introducing us beginners to this library.

Thank you for your fantastic work.

I definitely think that both are a great idea. While I use jQuery for everything and am dying to get deeper into the API, I am also newly self taught in all things javascript and am sure there are basics that I never learnt that I would find very useful.

    Thanks for your great tuts.

I can't wait for playschool!! Bring on the complete noob tutorials. Like a lot of folks designing on the net, I am self taught, and all I need is to understand the basics (which I don't) and I will take it from there. Your blog is the best out on the web for quality tutorials and great screencasts! Way to go.

I'm interested in how to do a couple of (related) things

    1) the 'mobile me calendar click and drag to create event' effect

    2) multiple instances of widgets (such as above) which a user dynamically creates

I like the idea of the two different tuition sections. I agree with others that there are lots of tutorials out there for beginners - so having a section focusing on more advanced jQuery techniques would be great.

I would prefer the more sophisticated tutorials, like the ones you have been giving, but I can see how that might be difficult to come up with something that slick and new each month, let alone week.

So playschool interims would be nice.

I think the answer is 'Yes, please!'
